How it works & limits

Select a measurement family, enter an amount, and choose units. Swap exchanges the units while keeping the entered amount. Temperature includes offsets and rejects values below absolute zero. These are absolute temperatures, not temperature differences.

US liquid and imperial gallons differ; US cups mean 236.5882365 mL. Storage uses decimal kB/MB/GB and binary KiB/MiB/GiB. Time uses fixed 24-hour days; months and calendar years are omitted. Values are limited to ±1e12 and results use floating-point arithmetic rounded to 12 significant digits.

About this tool

Unit converter translates values across length, mass, temperature, area, volume, speed, time, and data storage, with a quick swap between the chosen units. It is the everyday converter for recipes, travel, and technical notes.

Conversion factors are fixed and computed locally, so results are consistent and work offline. Temperature conversions are handled separately because they involve offsets rather than only ratios.

How to use it

  1. Choose the category of measurement.
  2. Select the from and to units.
  3. Enter the value and read the converted result.
  4. Use the swap control to convert in the other direction.

Worked examples

  • Body temperature: 37 °C = 37 × 9/5 + 32 = 98.6 °F.
  • Running distance: 5 km = 5,000 ÷ 1,609.344 ≈ 3.10686 miles.
  • Fuel: 10 US liquid gallons ≈ 8.32674 imperial gallons, because a US gallon (3.785 L) is smaller than an imperial gallon (4.546 L).
  • Storage: 1 GB (decimal) is 1,000,000,000 bytes, which is about 0.9313 GiB (binary).

Most conversions multiply by a fixed factor to a base unit and back. Temperature is the exception, because Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points. That is why the converter applies an offset as well as a factor, and rejects values below absolute zero.

Units that are easy to mix up

Gallons, pints, and cups differ between US and imperial measures, and a US cup in recipes is 236.59 mL, not the 250 mL "metric cup". Nautical miles (1,852 m) are used at sea and in aviation, while statute miles (1,609.344 m) are used on roads. Storage manufacturers use decimal kilobytes and gigabytes, but operating systems often report binary kibibytes and gibibytes. That is why a new "1 TB" drive shows about 931 GB in Windows.

Time conversions use fixed 24-hour days. Months and calendar years vary in length, so they are left out rather than approximated. Use the date calculators for calendar arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

Why is temperature handled differently?

Temperature scales have different zero points, so they need offset formulas rather than a single multiplication factor.

Which data storage units are used?

Both decimal (kilobyte, megabyte) and binary (kibibyte, mebibyte) units are available; choose the one your context expects.

Does the converter round?

Results are shown with practical precision; extremely large or small values are displayed in a readable form rather than with meaningless digits.

Does converting a temperature difference work the same way?

No. A difference of 10 °C equals a difference of 18 °F, without the +32 offset. This converter handles absolute temperatures only.
