Counting days: date differences, business days, and ISO weeks

Inclusive vs. exclusive counts, working days with holidays, month-end arithmetic, leap-day birthdays, and ISO week numbers.

“How many days until the deadline?” sounds like a question with one answer. In practice it has several, depending on whether you count the start day, the end day, weekends, and holidays. Disagreements of one day in contracts, delivery promises, and leave requests almost always come from those unstated choices. This guide makes them explicit.

Inclusive vs. exclusive counting

From Monday to Friday of the same week there are four days if you count the gaps between dates, and five if you count the dates themselves. Both answers are correct for different purposes:

  • Exclusive (end minus start): hotel nights, elapsed days, how long ago something happened, the age of an invoice.
  • Inclusive (both dates count): event days, leave days, the number of days a promotion runs.

The date difference tool gives the exclusive count by default and adds one when you switch on inclusive counting. From 2026-01-01 to 2026-12-25 is 358 days exclusive, or 359 inclusive. When a number matters, write down which convention you used next to it.

Business days

Working-day counts add weekends and holidays to the mix. Take the period from Monday 2026-12-21 to Friday 2027-01-08, with Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day as holidays. The business days calculator finds 19 calendar dates, of which 4 are weekend days and 2 are holidays falling on weekdays. December 26, 2026 is a Saturday, so it is not subtracted twice. That leaves 13 working days, or 12 if the start date is excluded.

Points to settle before counting:

  • Which days are working days? Monday to Friday is common, but Sunday to Thursday is the working week in several countries, and many businesses run six-day or four-day weeks.
  • Which holidays? Public holidays differ by country, region, and even employer. No list is assumed, so enter the dates that apply to you.
  • Does day one count? “Delivery within 5 business days” of an order usually starts counting the next business day. “Leave from Monday to Friday” includes both.

Adding months: the month-end problem

Adding days is unambiguous, but adding months is not, because months have different lengths. What is January 31 plus one month? There is no February 31. Systems handle this in two ways: they either clamp to the last day of the month (February 29 in 2024) or overflow into the next month (March 2). The date add/subtract tool clamps, like most spreadsheet functions such as EDATE.

Month arithmetic is also not associative. January 31 plus two months is March 31, but plus one month and then another is March 29, because the first step already moved to the 29th. That is why the tool combines years and months into one step before adding weeks and days. For subscription renewals and notice periods, check which rule your contract or billing system uses.

Ages and leap-day birthdays

Age is counted in completed years: you turn 18 on your birthday, not gradually. For someone born on February 29, the birthday only exists in leap years, and conventions differ for other years. The age calculator lets you choose. For a birth date of 2008-02-29, on 2026-02-28 the person is 18 under the February 28 convention, but 17 years and 364 days under the March 1 convention. For legal ages, the rule of the relevant jurisdiction applies, and it is not always the same one.

ISO week numbers

Many businesses, especially in Europe, plan by week number. ISO 8601 defines weeks as starting on Monday, with week 1 being the week that contains January 4, or equivalently the first Thursday of the year. The consequences surprise people:

  • 2021-01-01 was in week 53 of 2020 (2020-W53-5).
  • 2024-12-30 was in week 1 of 2025 (2025-W01-1).
  • 2026 has 53 weeks, because it starts on a Thursday. 2027-01-01 is 2026-W53-5.

So the ISO week-year is not always the calendar year. A report that groups by year and week separately will misfile the days around New Year. Use the week-year that belongs to the week. The ISO week calculator converts in both directions and shows the Monday-to-Sunday range of each week. US calendars often use a different system, with weeks starting on Sunday and week 1 containing January 1, so confirm which one a schedule uses.

Write dates unambiguously

03/04/2026 is March 4 in the US and April 3 in most other countries. ISO 8601 dates, 2026-03-04, are unambiguous, sort correctly as text, and are understood by every spreadsheet and programming language. Use them in file names, data exports, and anything shared across countries.

When clock times and time zones are involved, the rules change again. See the guide on time zones, DST, and Unix timestamps.
