Convert a static PNG to JPEG

Choose the JPEG quality and background color. Photos often become smaller; graphics and text can show compression artifacts.

Static images, processed on your device

Supports static PNG, 8-bit grayscale/RGB JPEG, and static WebP as listed by this tool. Animation, SVG, HEIC, AVIF, and CMYK JPEG are not supported. EXIF orientation is applied before editing. Re-encoding removes source metadata and color profiles, can change colors, and reduces high-bit-depth images to browser canvas output. JPEG and WebP output may change pixels. For transparency, choose PNG or WebP. Outputs are limited to 100 MiB.

About this tool

PNG to JPG converts a static PNG into JPEG with a quality setting and an explicit background color for transparent areas. It is the usual step when an image must meet a JPEG-only upload requirement.

The conversion happens locally, and because JPEG does not support transparency, any transparent pixels are flattened onto the background you choose. Metadata and color profiles from the source are not carried over.

How to use it

  1. Choose the PNG image.
  2. Set the JPEG quality level.
  3. Pick the background color that should replace transparency.
  4. Convert and download the JPEG.

Worked example

A 3.1 MB PNG screenshot of a photograph converts to a JPEG of a few hundred kilobytes at quality 85. A logo with a transparent background converts too, but the transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you choose, usually white. Choose a matching colour if the image will sit on a coloured page.

When JPEG is the wrong choice

JPEG is designed for photographs. On images with sharp edges and flat colours, such as screenshots of text, charts, logos, and line art, it creates fuzzy halos (ringing artifacts) and can end up barely smaller than the PNG. Keep those as PNG, or convert them to WebP, which supports lossless mode and transparency.

Good candidates for PNG to JPG conversion are photos that were saved as PNG by a screenshot tool or an editing app. They are often ten times larger than necessary. Animated PNGs are not supported; only the first frame would be meaningful.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to transparent areas?

They are filled with the background color you select, since JPEG cannot store an alpha channel.

Will the JPEG be smaller than the PNG?

Usually yes for photographic content. For flat graphics with few colors, PNG may already be smaller and converting can increase size.

Are animated PNGs supported?

No. Only static PNG images are supported.

Why did my transparent logo get a white box?

JPEG cannot store transparency. Pixels that were transparent are filled with the chosen background colour. Keep the PNG, or use WebP, when you need transparency.
