How it works & useful details

A smaller format for the web

Choose a static PNG, convert it, then preview and download your WebP. Original dimensions and transparent areas are retained.

High-quality compression

Conversion uses the browser’s WebP encoder at quality 90%. It is lossy, so pixels can change and a smaller file is not guaranteed. Animated PNG and source metadata are not preserved.

About this tool

PNG to WebP converts a static PNG to WebP while keeping its dimensions and transparency. For graphics with transparency that need to be smaller, it is often the best of both formats.

The image is decoded and re-encoded locally in a worker, and the conversion is available with a high-quality setting by default. Source metadata and color profiles are not carried over.

How to use it

  1. Choose the PNG image.
  2. Review the detected format and dimensions.
  3. Run the conversion.
  4. Download the WebP file.

What to expect

The converter encodes at quality 90 with the browser's WebP encoder, keeping the original dimensions and transparency. Photographic PNGs often shrink dramatically, sometimes by 80–90%, because PNG is a poor format for photos. Flat graphics and screenshots also usually get smaller, though by less, and occasionally the lossy WebP is larger than a well-optimised PNG. Compare the sizes shown and keep the smaller file.

Because the encoding is lossy, fine one-pixel details such as small text may soften slightly. Check the preview at 100% zoom for UI screenshots and diagrams.

Where WebP is accepted

All modern browsers display WebP, and it supports transparency, which makes it a drop-in replacement for PNG on websites, including logos and icons on coloured backgrounds. Some email clients, older image viewers, print services, and document editors still have limited support. Keep the PNG original for those uses.

Animated PNGs (APNG) are not supported. Only static images are converted, and source metadata is not copied.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP keep transparency?

Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparent areas survive the conversion.

Is the WebP always smaller than the PNG?

Usually for photographic or richly detailed images. Very simple graphics may compress similarly in both formats.

What are the limits?

One image up to 20 MiB and 24 megapixels, with a 100 MiB output bound.
